SPOILER: Saturday's "dress rehearsal" setlist & notes

Here's the report from @U2 staff inside the LA Sports Arena tonight. Major, major spoilers ahead......

Setlist

City of Blinding Lights
The Electric Co.
An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart
Beautiful Day
Miracle Drug
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Love and Peace or Else
Elevation
Stuck in a Moment...
Yahweh
Bullet the Blue Sky
Running to Stand Still

(break for human rights video)

Zoo Station
The Fly
Vertigo

(break)

Pride
Where the Streets Have No Name
One
All Because of You
40

Song notes:
  • Larry plays keyboards during "Yahweh"
  • during "Love and Peace or Else", Larry is at the edge of the egg when the song starts, playing drums there; during the middle of the song, he goes back to the main stage and drums from there, while Bono drums at the edge of the egg
  • during "Zoo Station", Edge is using a "Vertigo" guitar -- black with the red circles on it
  • "Streets" does not have a red-colored background; flags of the countries on the African continent are shown behind the band instead
  • "40" is performed as it was 20 years ago -- each band member leaves the stage one-at-a-time, and Larry ends the show with a brief drum solo

Stage notes:
  • very simple stage, clean - just Larry's drums, Edge's stuff, keyboards, and lots of room for Bono to move around
  • 3-level video screen
  • main stage is shaped like the "Vertigo" spirals
  • the "egg" extends further out onto the floor than the Elevation "heart" did
  • there's no b-stage at the far end of the egg, but there is enough room for the band to play, just like on the Elevation Tour

They are just swapping the instruments all over the place! I assume Edge and Adam did the same on 40.

Another site is reporting the exact same setlist, except that they also have Gloria in between One and All Because of You. Does anyone have confirmation of this one way or another?

Whoops -- YES, Edge and Adam did switch on "40" just like old times.

And I also saw a different setlist from tonight elsewhere, and called back to our gang and confirmed that what's posted above is 100% accurate. No Gloria. (The other list I saw was missing "Electric Co" and had "One" twice - not the case.)

Thanks Matt. I see that the other site has adjusted to match yours now. I wish the band would adjust Pride outta there (reading reports it sounds like the band is bored with it), otherwise...very nice. :-)

I have mixed feelings about this set.
the biggest is it seems short about 3 songs. Last Time i saw them they played 23 songs.I really expected at least the same if not 25 songs.

I think "stuck in" and miracle drug are just a wasted of space much rather hear walk on and crumbs in those spots.

excited about the songs from boy. They remembered there are other good songs on that record

no songs from Pop? glad to see disco go, but there are some soild songs that are missing. 10 songs from the last 2 records but 0 from the 2 before that(POP and Zooropa)

was really hoping for in gods country this time round

OVER ALL I HAVE LOVE EVERY U2 SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN {4 SHOWS OVER 3 TOURS) I AM SURE I WILL LOVE THIS TOUR AS WELL.

I dont know where Velasquez heard crumbs, original, haven't found, bad, She's a mystery to me, surrender, 11 o clock, party girl, and peace on earth/walk on

I just drove into Vegas back from LA. It was GREAT seeing the band put the show together - messing up a few times like on "Stuck" and "Pride" and esp seeing them improvise esp Bono not knowing quite what to do during the middle section of Bullet. Some songs were AMAZING live, mostly the harder ones: Vertigo, Love and Peace, Zoo Station, The Fly, COBL and ABOY. Vertigo and Love and Peace esp were nailed. They really owrked on these and extended these songs out.

For 40 I am pretty sure Edge and Adam traded instruments! Edge took Adam's side on the right, and Adam took the Left. From where I was standing it definitely looked like Edge was playing bass!

Bono's voice was GREAT! Even Pride was sung really well.

The crowd definitely does help make the show. Many people around us seemed lost during the Boy songs, Zoo Station, and pretty much all the non singles.

The flags during Streets was a great gesture but didnt do much for the song itself. There were alot of visuals on the hanging lighting curtains that seemed very Popmartish... bright colors and simple cartoonish graphics but they didnt do much fo the songs (IMHO) maybe they are still working on that part. But Vertigo, Love and Peace, and COBL were not only nailed down musically but visually as well.

I really hope they do drop Bullet in favor of someting else.

Certain songs still needed some work but you could see/hear that every new song had enormous potential. And almost every older song was played excellently if not better... esp Zoo Station. It was a little cumbersome before but now it is really tight and has more groove and flow to it.

I LOVE that they brought back Zoo Station, but would also love to find out what prompted this choice to pull out of the vaults.

I was there last night, and while I would have agreed with you about Stuck BEFORE the show, these two songs were absolute highlights. Stuck was done a bit differently than on the last tour. And MD? One of my favs from the album, so I was looking forward to it!

Stuck and Miracle Drug are two songs that are speaking to the band quite a bit at this stage in their lives - and the flow of the concert wouldn't be the same without them. Stuck was done so beautifully - just piano and guitar ...done almost as slowly as SBS was done on Popmart.

I fully believe that this setlist will be changing over the course of the tour, so don't lose hope for some surprises.

As for Streets and the African Flags - putting the global spin on Streets during the point in the show where Bono's trying to put attention to Africa and other nations, I thought it added another layer to Streets that hasn't been dug into in quite a long time. Let's face it, everyone has come to expect the red screens going into the white at the creshendo - I found the nations flags and the global take on the song quite refreshing. Concert-goers need to be challenged to view things differently after being exposed to songs and visuals for so long (for Streets - it's been 17 years).

As for 40 - yes, Adam was on guitar and Edge was on Bass...they did trade off.

The cartoonish graphics should hopefully be replaced - there were many people on the floor in the "gated community" with their notebooks and laptop computers - those production coordinators were taking notes and after we all left probably had dinner with the band and everyone, compared notes, and made decisions on what to do. I really believe they did not show us everything they have up their sleeves for Opening night. The quasi-AOL walking guy during SYCMIOYO seemed a bit too computer-generated for my tastes too...if you've got the ability to broadcast the band's faces on them - which they did during Pride - then that should be who's on those screens because Bono was on ALL of the tv screens above the stage. That's my thought, fwiw.

For the Boy songs and other "non-singles" - mbeano: what side were you sitting on? Were you with the radio winners, or were you with us? Our section was going nucking futs with the old material, Zoo Station and the other non-singles. It was amazing to hear that stuff after following them for 20+ years.

Oh - as for the visuals for the show...if you're on the floor, you're not going to get the full show. IMHO, the "best" seats in the house are going to be in the upper sections - farther away the better. If you think your nosebleed seats are crap - you've got some of the best seats in the house. AMAZING!

u2isable... I was sitting with contest winners, only a handful of us, in my section were excited about Electric Co, An Cat Dubh and Zoo Station. And almost noone sang along to 40. (not in the entire section mind you, just the small corner that I was in)

In regards to The flags during streets. I actually did like the fact that they changed it up and gave "Streets" some new dimension. What I was mainly commenting on was how VISUALLY they werent appealing and added nothing to the songs. In regards to theme, purpose, meaning etc, yes they did add alot and made me think and feel more about the "Africa Thing" (as Bono put it)

I really meant to say that the visuals themselves need some reworking, not the ideas - Does that make sense. Like during the flags, there wasnt much movement during the main thrust and momentum of the song until later. Maybe they will add additional lighting effects to match the momentum of Streets. Keep the ideas just change the execution, add more movement to match the pacing. I was just too tired to explain. I also felt that the lights coming on later in the song really added to the anticipation and excitement of Streets... they also extended it further to add this part - I almost went insane here.

All of this is just minor critiquing because that is partly what we were there for :) Overall I loved it!

U2 did an awesome job. This rehersal was just as good as a concert. They were only supposed to play for 30 minutes, but they chose to do an entire setlist for us. Some 22 songs or so. More then enough to satisfy me.

I believe that the people who won tickets weren't as enthusiastic as the fans that were waiting outside for hours (some of them for days). Everyone was singing along word-by-word.

I'm pretty sure that this was not the final set, maybe not even close as you noticed there were alot of earlier U2 songs being played and not much new material. After the buses left with the radio ticket winners, the band went back in there and continued to play. They played a completely different set, which I won't spoil for the people who are anticipating the setlist. But you won't be disappointed.

U2 you are great, your staff and all. Many thanks to Kevin and the staff for a great job. You all worked hard. Everyone deserves a big hand for a job well done, everyone from the crew to the band themselves.

THANKS U2 FOR ONE UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT!!!!

To anyone who went to the Dress Rehearsal, ... Do you remember during what song Bono had asked The Edge "Tooo slow there Edge?"

Was it Sometimes, Stuck, Yahweh, or Running? or even another song? I cant remember

SPOILER

Look for Bday then NYD. Stuck is gone. Also they might try SBS then Bullet. In attempt to keep the show rocking they might move Vertigo upto the 2nd spot in the set. With or without you was tried after the rehearsal show, but was decided against. Unfortunately, there might be a couple small changes, but once this set is down, they won't do major changes.
